Moose Bags with Scarring

And for the Survivor in your life:

When we are selecting hides for your leather orders we sometimes come across moose leather that has scars on it.  We almost never find deer with scars in the skin, always with moose, because when a moose sees a challenge, they go through it while deer jump over it.  These scars are healed injuries that might have come from a battle with another animal or perhaps a barbed wire fence.  Either way, these scars speak of survival.  They are very dramatic and emotional. The scars tell a story of strength, determination and survival.  We are called to honour these special pieces of leather so we save them up and make unique one of a kind bags that share the history of the moose.

Product Description

Scarred Moose Leather Bags.

For nearly 30 years, we at Tribal Spirit have been deeply connected to the process of gathering wild deer and moose hides. We work directly with local butchers to purchase these hides, carefully salt them to preserve their quality, and we work with three Canadian tanneries to have them tanned.

Working with wild hides is a deeply emotional and meaningful experience.  While we are not hunters ourselves, we have built a relationship of mutual respect with the local hunting community.  All of our hides come from animals hunted for food—something we ensure because sport hunting is neither respected nor permitted in Quebec. This work supports our team of 20 employees, providing sustenance for 20 families. Still, we would always rather see a moose or deer roaming freely in the forest.

Occasionally, while sorting hides for leather orders, we come across moose leather marked with scars. These scars are reminders of healed wounds—perhaps from a battle with another animal or an encounter with a barbed wire fence. Deer hides rarely have scars, as deer tend to leap over challenges, while moose face them head-on.  Each scar tells a powerful story of pain, survival, and resilience. They are tangible evidence of an animal’s journey, imbued with drama and emotion.

At the same time we are conscious that we are working with leather from an animal that is no longer wandering the forest and reminded of the fact that ‘no one gets out alive’.  But we still fight the good fight.  We are called to honour these special pieces of leather so we save them up and make unique one of a kind bags that share the history of the life of a moose.

Each bag is a tribute to their strength, determination, and healing—a celebration of their spirit and story.
