The traditional / historical way to turn a hide into leather is using the brain of the animal as the tanning agent. The chemicals in every animal (yup us too I guess) will tan their own hide into leather.
It requires an enormous amount of labour, patience and also skill to make good Brain Tanned Leather. We have teamed up with someone locally who is doing amazing work.
We have natural white hides which have no odour at all and we have smoked brown/tan hide. They smell softly of smoke, not too overwhelming which can sometimes be the case. Smoking of a hide changes the structure and make the leather more waterproof.
Brain Tanning involves scraping the hide which sometimes creates cuts. Any cuts have been very carefully sewn up. Please zoom in on the picture to see this.
